Study Tour: Models for a proficient bio-waste management – the case of Sardinia

The CirBioWaste project is organising a capacity-building activity – Study Tour: “Bio-Waste Management Systems in Sardinia”, which will take place from 10th to 13th March 2026 in Sardinia, Italy. This event will offer participants an in-depth view of successful bio-waste collection and treatment systems implemented in the region.

Co-funded by the Interreg Euro-MED Programme, the project unites partners from Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, and Bulgaria under the coordination of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).With the support of 19 associated partners across six Mediterranean countries, CirBioWaste CirBioWaste aims to drive the transition toward a circular and resource-efficient bio-economy by transferring proven bio-waste management solutions and strengthening local governance frameworks.

Detailed information about the event:

Date: 10-13 March 2026

Format: On-site

Location: Sardinia, Italy

Agenda of the event: It will be available soon

Main goal: Participants will explore how policy design, financial mechanisms, citizen engagement and decentralised management models can generate outstanding results in urban and rural areas.

What this visit offers: The study tour offers a unique opportunity to learn directly from a real-world success story and identify insights applicable to other CirBioWaste territories.

Why Sardinia? Sardinia is one of the Mediterranean’s top success cases in waste management, moving from one of Italy’s lowest performers (2003) to the best-performing island region.

This shift was driven by strong regional governance, early adoption of mandatory door-to-door collection, and economic incentives.

Today, Sardinia presents:
• 75.8% separate collection rate (2022);
• ~90% of residents covered by door-to-door collection;
• 200+ Zero Waste municipalities;
• Cagliari Metropolitan Area: 76% selective collection + full PAYT system;
• 22 composting plants + new anaerobic digestion facilities under construction.

This study tour represents a critical milestone for Mediterranean cooperation, moving from dialogue to direct observation to accelerate the transition toward a resource-efficient bio-economy.
